NOT DONE YET

A book by Brian Nelson

The Magical Run of the College Team That Lost Its School.

In 2024, as Birmingham-Southern College closed, its baseball team defied the odds—playing for each other, their coach, and a legacy that captured the nation's heart.

In the spring of 2024, the baseball team at Birmingham-Southern College faced a reality almost no athletes encounter: their 170-year-old school would close before the season ended. As classrooms prepared to empty and a historic campus prepared to shut its gates, Head Coach Jan Weisberg and his players chose not to retreat into disappointment but to rally around the culture that had defined the program for decades: play for the guy next to you. Against the backdrop of uncertainty, grief, and national attention, a young and unproven team discovered resilience, unity, and purpose, transforming their final season into a remarkable story of leadership, brotherhood, and perseverance. More than a baseball story, this book explores how people respond when the future disappears, and how a team, a coach, and a community found meaning in finishing with integrity when everything they knew was coming to an end.

“I’ve directed films on the biggest programs and best coaches in sports—this is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The purest story in sports. A powerful testament to resilience, leadership, and brotherhood.”

“Like the sunsets over the Birmingham-Southern campus, the baseball team’s final run was beautiful—tragic, but beautiful. Even after the sun is gone, its glow endures. So too will the stories of Birmingham-Southern College and its baseball program. Because a sunset isn’t an end. It’s where the stories begin.”

Patrick Coleman, D3Baseball.com

“Adversity does not define us—our response to it does. I hope readers come away [from the book] believing that while we cannot always choose the challenges we face, we can always choose to lead with character, finish with integrity, and refuse to let setbacks define our story.”

Meet Brian

Brian Nelson is a lifelong baseball fan, former player, and dedicated coach whose love for the game spans generations. A pitcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara in the 1980s, he later coached his three sons and their teammates through Little League, high school, and college. Drawing inspiration from a deeply literary family—especially his grandfather and mother—Nelson brings an analyst’s brain, a storyteller’s heart, and impressive baseball knowledge to his writing. After a multi-decade career in finance, he has returned to his earliest passion to tell this story. This is his first book.
